In a Rut

In a rut - same breakfast last five yearsI find myself doing the same things over and over and over — think it’s part habit, part laziness…

For example, I’ve:

  • Stopped at the same fast-food restaurant every day on the way home from work to get a Diet Coke with light ice for 15 years.
  • Eaten the same breakfast and lunch for at least five years. Same thing. Every day.
  •  Pulled the car out of my driveway and driven away from the house (which is located on a horseshoe) in the same direction every day since I bought the house. (Once I backed into my son’s brand new car parked across from the driveway. That was something different…but that’s another blog post.)
  • Worn a lot of the same classic clothes for years.

It’s time to shake things up! Change some patterns and do things differently!

As Ellen Glasgow said in the early 1900’s, “The only difference between a rut and a grave is their dimensions.”

What are some routines you’ve followed for way too long?

    15 years!! Holy smokes! Do you ever have to order or do they just know what you are there for?

      Actually, a lot of the time they see me drive up and when I get to the speaker to order they just say, “Large Diet Coke with light ice, right?” It always makes me laugh. But the turnover is pretty high, so I have to “train” the new employees a lot!

  2. Wow, that a long time. I tend to eat the same pb sandwich every day I go to work, just cause it’s easy and keeps me full. But days I don’t work I switch it up.

    Good to recognize, and also good to change up! I really like everything bagels with just cream cheese on them (;

    totally understand being in a rut. I tend to get stir crazy if I don’t occasionally mix things up so I try to stay inspired with new cooking recipes ( try new foods and restaurants, etc. ) as well as new crafts, read new books, travel to new places (even locally) and just generally experience new things to stay fresh 🙂

    Wow! I don’t think I have anything I do that consistently. Obviously, driving to and from work becomes very routine. Often, I have to go somewhere different after work like an appointment, but I catch myself turning towards home instead.

    Good luck on changing it up!! Change is a good thing for us to experience. I highly recommend dolce de leche caramel cheerios for breakfast! 😉

  7. Yikes! That is a LONG time of eating and drinking the same thing! I can’t even eat the same thing 3x a week! I guess I thrive on variety! It will be fun for you (hopefully) to spice things up a little bit!
