What’s Up with the Pantone Color of the Year — Marsala?

What's Up with the Pantone Color of the Year -- Marsala?

Every year, the Pantone Color Institute picks a representative color of the year. For 2015, it’s marsala.

Previous colors of the year were Radiant Orchid, a deep tropical purple (2014); Emerald Green (2013); and Tangerine Tango (2012). Those I understood.

But what color is marsala?

Why does it sound like a food? (Marsala, marshmallow)

Turns out it’s a rusty, reddish-brownish color mixture that, in my opinion, is really dull. It’s not a rich burgundy, a radiant red or a full-bodied brown. It’s just a muted mix of those colors.

It’s kind of pretty as a lipcolor, but seems simply “blah” for anything else.

Please — with all the gorgeous hues out there, Pantone people  — pick a better color next year!
