Most stores sell pre-packaged Christmas-time-blooming bulbs, such as narcissi (known as paperwhites), in a flower pot. Prices range from $8 – $20, and they make a nice gift.
However, you can make the same thing for your friends and family for less than $5 .
Simply go to a local nursery and buy individual “forced” bulbs that are just beginning to sprout — for about $.99 each, pick up a flower pot at a thrift or dollar store, gather some lightweight potting soil that you probably have around the house (or buy a small bag at the dollar store) and plant a few bulbs in each pot, sprout side up.
Wrap a decorative ribbon around the pot, attach a festive tag and give the gift of lovely, fragrant flowers! All recipients have to do is water the plants occasionally and watch them grow. No green thumb is required!
