Starting a Mothers Group Transformed My Life

Starting a Mothers Group Transformed My Life

Starting a local mothers group was one of the best things I ever did.

After I had a baby, I quit my full-time job as a bank manager and abruptly become an at-home mom.  As a former career woman and fairly new resident of the area, I had no friends who were mothers — and my mom lived 800 miles away. My husband was gone a lot and I had no idea what I was doing with a new baby — just knew I loved my child fiercely. Continue reading

My One Word for 2015 is Actually Two Words

My One Word for 2015Have been fascinated by reading various blog posts over the years where people write about choosing their “one word” for the year such as enjoy, improve, flow, create or relax.

It’s basically their mantra for 365 days, and a goal to focus on that year. It’s a word that provides guidance and gives them strength.

Many times, it replaces New Year’s resolutions. Continue reading

I’ve (Finally!) Been Invited to Buy a New Amazon Echo

Amazon Echo Invitation to Buy

In early November 2014, I wrote a blog post after reading about the cool new Amazon Echo digital household assistant, raving about what a great Christmas gift it would be. Well… that didn’t work out because you had to be “invited” to buy it — and at long last (and, of course, after Christmas), my official invitation arrived. (See it below, with the interesting questions and answers it contains about the device). Continue reading

Dragon Boating: A Unique and Fun Team Sport

Dragon Boating_ A Unique Team Sport

Dragon boating is a unique, fun sport.

I recently registered with the Charleston Paddle Club meet-up group and joined some members of the local dragon boat team for an hour-long morning practice session on the Ashley River. (Members compete in regional events, and their practice sessions are open to novices.)

Several people gave me pointers, loaned me a “splash jacket,” and off we went. Continue reading

2015 Life Goals (Not Resolutions)

2015 Life Goals (Not Resolutions)

Read a thought-provoking editorial in the Jan. 1 issue of Bottom Line Personal magazine (which I love because it has such great tips). The author, Karen Larson, suggests doing away with the term “bucket list” (because it’s too death-evoking) and using what Chris Guillebeau, author of The Happiness of Pursuit, calls a “life list” instead. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Guillebeau advocates creating life-list entries in categories, since a varied list encourages you to stretch.

I’m adapting these ideas to the short term in documenting my 2015 aspirations (Finally! It’s Jan. 9!) by calling them my 2015 Life Goals instead of resolutions. Who knows — maybe that simple change will help me amp up follow-through?! Continue reading

2014 Year in Review

2014 Year in Review

Here’s my 2014 year in review:

1) Am still single and searching. Have had a few “first Internet dates” this year (and enough time has passed that I can now laugh about them!) They weren’t horrible enough to be described in detail in a separate bad dates blog post, so that’s a plus.

One date involved a humongous man (oh how deceiving those online dating photos are!) who was nice but insisted on kissing me multiple times at my car outside the restaurant alongside a major road until I finally pushed him away (which took some doing). It felt like a giant chest bump (ugggghhhh) when he got close to me.   Continue reading
