Visiting Bulls Island — a pristine, unspoiled island in the Charleston, S.C. area — is an amazing way to spend a day and an adventure you won’t forget.
It’s a great place for walking, sunbathing, collecting shells, photography and visiting the hauntingly beautiful Boneyard Beach.
When I took my first trip to Bulls shortly after Tropical Storm Irma, a friend and I booked a ferry through Coastal Expeditions for a Beach Drop-off.
A naturalist provided interesting info about the island — which is part of the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline on the East Coast — on the ride over. And he showed us fascinating animal bones (alligators, sea turtles and more) and shells from the island on the way back.
He also pointed out dolphins leaping and frolicking in the distance and explained the role of the tall green Spartina grass surrounding the water and waving gently in the breeze.
When the ferry dropped us off, we walked along the beach the entire time, meandering in and around tree trunks and crossing little streams.
The shells were superb – and abundant — and hard to resist picking up! I’ve never seen so many big, beautiful shells — with such a variety of textures and colors.
The island was also dotted with gorgeous tree trunks — in shades of yellow, gray and brown — with surfaces that were striated, smooth, shiny and rough. Some of the prettiest trunks were bleached an amazing silver color that looked like they’d been painted.
If you live in the area and haven’t been there yet, go! And if you visit the area, be sure to make it part of your vacation.
This is a place I plan to visit again and again!
